Direct Line is a one stop shop for a broad variety of insurance policies, including not only many different types of business cover, but also cover for breakdowns, cars, homes, Landlords, pets, travel and vans.
It does business both online and on the phone and maintains a strong ethos of customer care and quality of service. It was amongst the first insurance companies to save customers money by cutting out middle men in favour of dealing directly with end policy holders.
At the very core of its customer focused philosophy is its commitment to pioneering new and innovative ways to continually make its customer lives easier with increased access, approachability and user friendliness.
History
Direct Line has enjoyed a stratospheric rise in the world of insurance since its formation by Peter Wood and his initial team of 63 in Croydon in 1985. It rapidly expanded, building its success on its simplistically human style of dealing with customers and reducing their costs with the exclusion of middle men and their hefty commissions.
As it is a part of the Royal Bank of Scotland’s insurance services, it effectively became a national concern alongside the bank following 2008’s credit crunch. In addition to Direct Line’s core insurance business, it also owns Green Flag, the UK’s third largest accident and breakdown roadside recovery company.
Today it employs over 10,000 staff across Germany, Italy and Spain besides in the UK, where it Head Office remains in Croydon, but its other sizeable call centres can be found in Birmingham, Bristol, Glasgow, Leeds and Manchester.

2006 was a very good year for Direct Line, when it received awards from Your Money for Best Direct Pet Insurance Provider and Best Direct Motor Insurance Provider, the British Insurance Awards E-business award, the FS Forum’s award for innovation in car insurance and the IFS awards for corporate social responsibility and innovation in car insurance.
