History
Zurich is a longstanding insurance provider formed in 1872, although Zurich did not enter its title until 1875, when Versicherung Verein became Zurich Marine & Accident Insurance. Following further Swiss acquisitions, it took over British American Financial Services in 1998, which included big brand names such as Allied Dunbar, Eagle Star and the Framers Group.
The following year, both of its holding companies, the UK’s Allied Zurich and Switzerland’s Zurich Allied, united under one of umbrella of Zurich Financial Services.
It employs 60,000 staff across offices in the North & Latin Americas, the Asia Pacifics, Europe and other emerging markets. 11,000 of its employees are UK based and, whilst its Head office remains in Zurich, its UK premises are in Birmingham, Cardiff, Cheltenham, Fareham, Farnborough, Glasgow, the Isle of Man, Leeds, London, Newcastle and Swindon.
Accolades
Amongst its raft of accolades, accreditations and awards, most recently Zurich has bagged the Best Business Protection Provider at the Business Moneyfacts Awards in 2009 and took home top honours in the same year in the insurance services category of the Charity Times Awards. In 2010, Zurich continued its five star run from Defaqto for its home and car insurance.

Types Of Liability Cover On Offer
Zurich’s small business and self employed liability policies range from basic ‘one cap fits all’ coverage to certain sector specific coverage. This allows its clients to pick and choose from various elements of liability cover that they require. In certain sectors, it outsources requests for liability cover to other approved insurance providers.
Its choice of policies solely designed to serve the needs of one man or woman bands and small firms include:-
- Combined SME Insurance
- Hair & Beauty
- Office
- SME Fleet
- Small Property Owners
- Shop
Construction and Tradesmen insurance requests can be referred to Trade Direct Insurance Services rather than being dealt with directly by Zurich.
Whilst the amount of SME policies on offer appears limited, the policy inclusions ensure that either one, or a combination of two of three sufficiently meet the needs of small businesses.
Policy Information
In most cases, with the exception of Hairdressers and Beauticians for whom Zurich have a fined tuned sector specific policy, its Combined SME insurance policy is a good a starting point for any small business dipping its toes in to insurance.
They are also able to take out additional policies as might be specifically relevant to them, for example, SME Fleet, which covers 3-5 company vehicles or Shop insurance.
Putting Zurich’s Combined SME Insurance under the spotlight as an all encompassing policy for small businesses operating within home environments, it incorporates:-
Business Interruption
Insures small businesses for fixed amounts of reimbursements for a variety of unforeseen accidents or damages to people, property or equipment that temporarily prevent them from trading.
Employers Liability
Protects small businesses against successful claims pursued against them, plus related legal expenses, for accidents, damages or illnesses suffered by their staff members as a direct result of carrying out company business either on or off site.
Public & Products Liability
Protects small businesses against successful claims pursued against them, plus related legal expenses, for accidents, damages or illnesses suffered by anyone not employed by businesses, such as sub contractors, members of the public, suppliers and customers, as a direct result of companies carrying out their business either on or off site. Likewise for similar misfortunes caused by products small businesses supply or sell.
Zurich’s experienced insurance advisors can help individuals and small business owners to decide whether additional policies are required in addition to their Combined SME insurance. Otherwise, it is highly likely to be substantial enough for them until the time when their needs might evolve alongside their company expansions.
Optional Extras
As the core of Zurich’s small business public liability cover is their Combined SME insurance, some of their other key SME policies such as office insurance, SME fleet insurance, small property owners insurance and shop insurance can theoretically be considered as add on policies.
Furthermore, Zurich offers insurance protection for many other aspects of running small businesses that their owners can opt in or opt out of as they deem befitting, covering:-
- Debts
- Frozen Foods
- Goods in Transit
- Legal Expenses
- Loss of Rental Income
- Personal Accident
- Sprinkler Leakage
- Squatter Eviction
- Subsidence
- Terrorism
In most of these cases, the sectors for which various elements might be required to complete the full pictures are fairly self explanatory.
